Problem: The Auction: North East South West 1NT 2S* 4D** 4S dbl all pass * spades and a minor ** transfer to hearts This week's deal is a defensive problem. As East, you open a 15-17 1NT, LHO bids 2S which is the Cappeletti convention, showing spades and a minor. Partner bids 4D, the Texas Transfer convention, a transfer to hearts. North bids 4S over this, and you decide that enough is enough and double. This ends the auction, and partner leads the Queen of Hearts (you play standard leads). Plan your defence. Solution: There can be only one logical explanation for partner's unusual lead of the Queen of Hearts: It is a suit preference card, asking for a diamond return. Partner must be looking for a diamond ruff, and declarer's minor must be diamonds. Your correct lead therefore is a diamond, and you should lead the five, your lowest one, as a suit preference for clubs. Partner ruffs this and plays a club to your Ace, and you give partner another diamond ruff. You get the Ace of Spades eventually, and you end up scoring the Ace of Clubs, the Ace of Spades, the Ace of Hearts and two diamond ruffs for a total of 5 tricks. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

True, You could have figured out to give partner his diamond ruffs even without the help of the opening lead, but his inspired lead made life simple for you. Partner's lead would have also caught your attention if the Jack of hearts were in the dummy.
